Former Nigerian international Dimeji Lawal has praised the emergence of Atalanta forward Ademola Lookman, highlighting the much-needed depth he has brought to the Super Eagles’ attack.
Lawal commended Lookman’s commitment, skill, and humility, describing him as a valuable asset to the national team.
Since switching allegiance from England to Nigeria in 2022, Lookman has been a standout performer for the Super Eagles. He made an instant impact, scoring three goals and providing an assist during his debut Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament, where Nigeria reached the final.
Lookman’s stellar performances culminated on Monday night when he was crowned African Player of the Year after an outstanding year for both club and country.
In an interview with Brila.net, Lawal emphasized the importance of having multiple options in the national team, especially when key players are unavailable.
He lauded Lookman for stepping up and contributing significantly to the team’s success.
“In recent times, I haven’t seen anything like him in terms of commitment, skill, dedication to the job, attitude, character, and humility.
It’s second to none, and his love for the country is amazing,” Lawal said.
“This is very, very good for the Nigerian national team because we don’t want to be a one-man team.
“We want to have several players who can deliver at any given time. Victor (Osimhen) is human like everyone else—sometimes he gets tired, or he might not be available.
But when we have players like Lookman who can step in and do wonderfully well, it’s a big plus for the Nigerian team.”
This season, the 27-year-old forward has continued his fine form, scoring 11 goals and registering five assists for Atalanta.
Lookman remains a pivotal figure in the Super Eagles’ quest for World Cup qualification, and his exceptional performances will be crucial in helping Nigeria achieve their goals.
