The Super Eagles secured a 2024 Africa Cup of Nations ticket after defeating Sierra Leone 3-2 in a thrilling encounter at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Stadium in Liberia, on Sunday.
The match was a must-win for Sierra Leone to keep their slim hopes of qualifying for the Cup of Nations, while a draw was enough for Nigeria.
The game started at a frenetic pace, with both sides looking to take the lead.
However, it was the Nigerian hitman, Victor Osimhen who drew first blood in the 19th minute.
Osimhen doubled his tally in the 31st minute, much to the delight of the Nigerian fans who were watching the game.
Sierra Leone, however, did not give up and pulled one back just before the break to keep the contest open.
The second half started with both teams looking to take the initiative, but it was Nigeria who looked more dangerous going forward.
When it seemed like the game would end, Sierra Leone scored with just six minutes of regular time left to play to level the scores.
A draw would have still been enough for Nigeria to secure qualification, but Kelechi Iheanacho had other plans.
The forward scored the decisive goal in the 95th minute to save Nigeria’s blushes and give them the win.
