Osimhen and Napoli’s Scudetto dream shattered by Empoli

Victor Osimhen’s Napoli kissed their Scudetto dream goodbye with a two-goal capitulation, to lose 3-2 against Empoli.

Osimhen was on the pitch, but could do nothing to save Napoli from bottling what looked like a flawless win in Sunday’s league clash.

The Nigerian got a few shots away, while Goalkeeper Alex Meret was tested twice by Valerio Verre, then made a near post save from Kristjan Asllani.

Osimhen was involved in Napoli’s opener on the stroke of half time when his dummy from Lozano cross set up Dries Mertens from 12 yards.

Lorenzo Insigne scored the second goal in the second half to put Napoli in firm control of the game.

However, Napoli took their foot off the pedal and the hosts managed to come back from the dead to snatch the game.

Empoli finally got a deserved goal when Kevin Malcuit was robbed in midfield and Liam Henderson with acres of space and time to control and drilled into the far bottom corner.

The equalizer did arrive when Meret was caught napping playing out from the back. Pinamonti managed to dispossess him and score from six yards.

Empoli completed the comeback with three minutes left to play. Bajrami whipped in a cross and Pinamonti slid in the ball from the back post.

It was Empoli’s first win since December 2021, which enough was also against Napoli, but only the Partenopei’s second away defeat of the season.
