Victor Osimhen and Leon Balogun were close to tears after the Super Eagles failed to seal qualification for Qatar 2022.
The Super Eagles were held to a 1-1 draw in the second leg at the Moshood Abiola’s Stadium on Tuesday.
Thomas Partey scored the opener for the Ghanaians before William Troost Ekong restored parity from the penalty spot after Ademola Lookman was brought down inside the box.
Osimhen then thought he had given Nigeria the lead when he smashed a ball inside the net, however, the officials ruled out the effort for offside.
However, the Super Eagles failed to get the all-important second goal in the second half as the Ghanaians held on to their slim advantage.
After the final whistle, Osimhen and Leon Balogun were stunned and almost broke into tears.
This was the moment they realized that they wouldn’t be able to play in the finals in Qatar later this year.
Osimhen hasn’t been to the World Cup before, despite making his Super Eagles debut in 2017. He missed the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia due to injury.
Balogun on his part featured played in Russia, but 2022 was his final chance to play at the World Cup.
