Osaze Odemwingie Eyes Nigeria’s Golf Glory at the Olympics

Former Super Eagles forward, Osaze Odemwingie has set his sights on elevating Nigeria’s presence in golf, aiming for the nation to make its mark at the Olympic Games.

The 43-year-old, who transitioned into professional golf in 2019, is eager to inspire a new generation of Nigerian golfers to compete on the global stage.

A New Sporting Dream

Odemwingie, who graduated from the Professional Golfers Association (PGA) school in June 2024, believes golf offers untapped potential for Nigeria. Speaking to BBC Sport Africa, he said:

“If I cannot play as a golfer, I can at least be in the team of a golfer who will play there. I want to introduce people to the game and build a generation of golfers, from Nigeria in particular, that will participate in the Olympics.”

Having experienced Olympic glory as part of Nigeria’s silver-winning football team in Beijing 2008, Odemwingie hopes to replicate that success in his new sport.

He also highlighted the impact of Nigeria’s historic football gold at the 1996 Atlanta Games as an inspiration.

“The medal is very well respected. It’s a way to sell the project to our state government.”

Building a Golfing Legacy

Beyond his Olympic ambitions, Odemwingie is committed to promoting golf in Nigeria.

He plans to engage government officials and corporations to discuss the sport’s benefits, including tourism, scholarships, and life-changing opportunities for young players.

“If we have more golf courses, there will be tourism. Kids can get scholarships in good countries.”

“If somebody sees an opportunity, they can latch on to it and give themselves an amazing life.”

“One of my dreams is to see a Nigerian flag on the European Tour or PGA Tour.”

Odemwingie also intends to establish a golf academy in Benin City, aiming to nurture young talents and introduce more Nigerians to the sport.

“Hopefully my story will encourage people to start participating, encourage parents to take their kids and give them a feel of golf.”

“I’m sure many of them will fall in love with the game just like I did.”

Educational and Professional Development

Odemwingie’s passion for golf extends to coaching and education.

Following his retirement from football in 2018, he has focused on continuous professional development.

He plans to pursue an honours degree at the University of Birmingham starting in September 2025.

“I have all the books ready to make the next step in coaching. I want to keep on following that path of continuous professional development and I’m interested in the courses the PGA offers.”

From Football to Fairways

Odemwingie enjoyed a successful football career, featuring for clubs like West Brom, Stoke City, and Lokomotiv Moscow.

He earned 65 caps for the Super Eagles, scoring 11 goals, and represented Nigeria at multiple international tournaments.

Now, he’s channeling that same determination into his golfing journey, hoping to inspire others along the way.

“It’s like any other sport. The earlier you start, you have a chance to become an elite.”

With his vision and dedication, Odemwingie seeks to become a pioneer for Nigerian golf on the global stage.
