Opabunmi Reveals Why He Snubbed Manchester United

Former Nigeria international, Femi Opabunmi has revealed his decision to join Grasshopper Club Zürich following his standout performance at the U17 World Cup in 2001.

Opabunmi attracted interests from several top clubs, including Manchester United, after the tournament.

Speaking on Brila FM’s “The Big Interview”, the 39 year-old explained that he was advised to choose a smaller club to aid his career development rather than making an immediate move to a high-profile club.

He revealed why he did not join major clubs like Manchester United, Lyon, and Celta Vigo that pursued him after his exceptional performance in the 2001 U17 World Championship.

“Sometimes in life, managers can mislead you. After the U17 tournament, Manchester United and other big teams came for me, but my manager advised me to go to a smaller team where I could play regularly,” Opabunmi said.

“Back then, as young players, we were eager to move abroad, so we followed the guidance of those we trusted. But at least if you sign for Man United, they can loan you to another team but you will know that you are a Man United product. The mentality wasn’t strong enough at that time.”
