Onyedika Returns from Injury, but Club Brugge’s Poor Title Defence Persists

Raphael Onyedika returned to action after a brief injury layoff, and made Club Brugge’s matchday squad against KRC Genk in the Belgian League.

Onyedika had made two appearances for Club – including in the Super Cup match against Royal Union SG. However the midfielder suffered a setback during the opening game of the season forcing his substitution against KV Mechelen.

The 23 year-old was then left out of the squad in the road game at Standard Liege, which Club Brugge lost.

So far this season, the defending champions have picked only one point – prior Sunday’s match against Genk.

Head coach Nicky Hayen would have hoped for a better start to the team’s season, but the 43 year-old is getting no reprieve.

But, he got a boost with the recovery of Onyedika, who was then thrown into the starting XI against Genk.

On the day, Club Brugge opened scoring and built a 2-0 lead with goals in the 44th and 60th minutes.

Genk then pulled one back in the 67th minute and piled on the pressure as they chased an equalizer.

In the 82nd minute, Onyedika was subbed off making way for Ardon Jashari.

A minute later they were pegged back by another goal from the hosts and it was Tolu Arokodare for his second goal of the season.

Genk were not done though and in additional time they got the game-winner through Patrik Hrosovsky (90+4′).

The victory moved Genk to 7th on the standings after three games, and their first win in early days of the season.
