Super Eagles midfielder Raphael Onyedika has started the season on a disappointing note with champions Club Brugge, as they were defeated 2-1 by Union Saint-Gilloise in the Belgian Super Cup.
Onyedika played a key role in Club Brugge’s triumphant Belgian Pro League title run last season.
The Super Cup, a traditional season opener between the league champions and the cup winners, was held at the Jan Breydelstadion in Brugge on Saturday.
Making their first appearance in the competition, Union SG emerged victorious after a hard-fought 2-1 win.
Onyedika began the match on the bench and entered the pitch in the 56th minute, with Club Brugge already trailing due to goals from Cameron Puertas and Fedde Leysen.
Christos Tzolis pulled one back for Club Brugge in the 79th minute, but it wasn’t enough to change the outcome, as Union Saint-Gilloise claimed the Super Cup with a 2-1 victory.
