Onazi recounts catching a thief down the street in Rome

Super Eagles midfielder Ogenyi Onazi has recalled a spectacular 2013 off-pitch experience while still in the books of Italian Serie A side, SS Lazio.

The 27-year-old who player was speaking on Brila FM’s Instagram Live on Wednesday evening said the experience was a spectacular one as he made headlines after the event.

‘I was having dinner with my brother near Termini Station and there were some tourists(men and women) sitting next to us. The men, probably their husbands were half-way drunk already, right behind us.

‘I saw a boy and immediately felt due to his suspicious behaviour that he wanted to steal something. I told my brother to take my wallets and keys to the car because I don’t know if I am the target.

‘I didn’t even have time to tell my brother that he had already snatched the tourist’s wallet and runoff.

‘I noticed it, so I ran after him, but stayed on the other side of the street. I ran for 300 meters, the mugger left the bag under a car, but I saw him.

‘I chased him down and brought him back to the restaurant, avoiding the ire of the people around there.

‘The funny thing is the owner of the bag never knew her bag as been stolen until I brought back the thief into the restaurant,” Onazi said.

‘I told the restaurant owner to call the police and we brought the bag back to the lady. She was in tears and thanked me, She has like Four thousand pounds that was meant for their shopping and tickets in the bag.

‘At that point, seeing as the situation had been resolved, my brother and I left.’

Onazi was left out of the national team’s provisional squad to AFCON 2019 after failing to fully recover from an Achilles injury suffered in December 2018 while playing for his club in Turkey.
