Olympics, World Cup have no impact on Local Basketball – Ogunade

Former Player and Administrator, Babs Ogunade has said that Nigeria’s International exploit in Basketball has contributed no positive impact on the local scene and players in the Country have suffered as a result.

Nigeria qualified for two editions of the World Cup (1998, 2006) and have featured at two Olympics (2012,2016), but the lack of deliberately policies to grow the Sport has seen a regression on the home front.

Ogunade, who is Chairman of the Lagos State Basketball Association, is a vocal critic of the Tijani Umar leadership of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF); in spite of his membership of on board.

Umar will run for the office of President for a third consecutive term; and the last time, based on the new electoral guidelines.

But, the Bauchi State Basketball Chief, has come under intense criticism from stakeholders for doing ‘little to promote the sport on the local front’ according to Ogunade.

Nigeria‘s biggest achievement in recent years, arguably, was D’Tigers‘ triumph at the Afrobasket Championship two years ago in Tunisia.
