Olympian Rebecca Cheptegei Dies After Being Set on Fire by Boyfriend

In a heartbreaking incident, Uganda long-distance and marathon runner, Rebecca Cheptegei has tragically passed away after suffering severe burns in what is reported to be an act of domestic violence.

Cheptegei, 33, who competed for her country at the 2024 Paris Olympics, succumbed to her injuries on Wednesday morning.

She was reportedly doused in petrol and set ablaze by her boyfriend, Dickson Ndiema, following a dispute over land in Eldoret, Kenya.

The incident, which took place on Sunday in her home in the small town of Endebess, left Cheptegei with burns covering 75% of her body.

Despite being rushed to the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital, where both she and Ndiema were treated for burns, her injuries proved too severe.

Neighbors rescued Cheptegei after hearing her cries for help, but the damage had already been done.
