Former Super Eagles player and coach, Sunday Oliseh, showered praise on Alex Iwobi and Calvin Bassey for their standout contributions to Fulham’s hard-fought 2-1 victory against Arsenal.
In a thrilling encounter at Craven Cottage on Sunday, Bassey, showcasing defensive prowess, boasted a 100% take-on success rate, a remarkable 93% pass accuracy, 76 touches, and 60 successful passes.
The 23-year-old demonstrated his defensive capabilities by winning possession five times, leading in clearances with five, securing victory in five duels, executing three tackles, and making two interceptions.
Iwobi, not to be outdone, played a pivotal role with two created scoring opportunities and two goal attempts.
Oliseh, visibly impressed with their stellar performance, expressed optimism for Nigeria’s prospects at the upcoming 2023 AFCON in Ivory Coast, which commences in just 12 days.
The coach emphasized that the duo’s display signifies positive developments for the national team on the continental stage.
“Extremely impressed by the maturity and discipline put up versus Arsenal, by Calvin Bassey and Alex Iwobi as they played decisive roles in Fulham’s victory over a seemingly, mentally tired Arsenal. Encouraging for the AFCON,” Oliseh posted after the game.
Iwobi and Bassey are in Jose Peseiro’s 25-man squad for the tournament and are expected resume camp with the rest of the squad in the United Arab Emirates on January 2.
