Former Super Eagles captain and coach, Sunday Oliseh, has announced his appointment to the International Football Association Board (IFAB), the organisation responsible for setting and updating the Laws of the Game in football.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Oliseh shared his excitement about the new role:
“Thrilled to announce my appointment to the International Football Association Board (IFAB)! IFAB is the global guardian of football’s laws, responsible for determining the laws of football, shaping the beautiful game for players and fans worldwide. Honored to contribute to its mission!”
The appointment is another significant step in Oliseh’s post playing career, which has seen him move seamlessly into coaching, punditry, and global football administration.
In recent years, he’s worked closely with FIFA, including as a member of its Technical Study Group—offering analysis and insight at major tournaments such as the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio and the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
Oliseh earned more than 60 caps for the Super Eagles and played a key role in the team that won the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations and claimed gold at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta.
Known for his intelligence on and off the pitch, his transition into football governance has felt like a natural progression.
IFAB, established in 1886, is made up of representatives from the football associations of England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, along with FIFA, which represents the rest of the world.
Together, they make decisions that shape how the game is played—from grassroots level to the World Cup final.
