Okoye inspires Sparta Rotterdam to hard fought win over VV Venlo

Maduka Okoye helped Sparta Rotterdam return to winning ways in the Eredivisie following the hsi side’s slim 1-0 victory over VV Venlo on Tuesday.

Okoye was at his best as Sparta brought an end to their 8-game winless run in the league.

He made several saves to help Sparta Rotterdam leave the Covebo stadium with the vital three points.

The first real test in the game for Okoye came in the 52nd minute of the encounter, when he had to stop Vito Van Crooij’s shot from range.

Two minutes later, Okoye was called to action again, this time it was former Sparta Rotterdam player Joshua John who unleashed a powerful drive from long distance, forcing the 21-year-old into a stunning save.

Okoye continued his fine form in goal, when he saved another effort from Dutch winger Yahcuroo Roemer in the 65th minute.

After being on the back foot for much part of the game, Sparta Rotterdam took the lead in the 70th minute and it was Swedish defender Kristopher da Graca who diverted a ball into his own net.

The home side almost snatched an equaliser in added time, when a cross from van Crooij met the head of Jafar Arias, but Okoye again pulled off an excellent save to deny the hosts.

Sparta Rotterdam moved to 12th on the log after 25 round of matches.
