Super Eagles assistant coach and Remo Stars head coach, Daniel Ogunmodede, has hinted at the possibility of adding new players to the team ahead of the delayed 2024 African Nations Championship, CHAN.
Speaking after Nigeria’s qualification for the tournament, Ogunmodede acknowledged the competition’s strict rules, which limit the number of players each team can register.
However, he emphasized the importance of finding players who can enhance the squad’s competitiveness.
“Our goal is to ensure there is competition within the team,” Ogunmodede explained. “We will try to bring in more players to avoid complacency in any department.“
Ogunmodede reiterated that any additional players called up would be evaluated on merit, ensuring they meet the standards required to strengthen the team.
“If we are preparing for CHAN proper, we’ll likely have more players. If there is a need to bring in others, we will, but it will be strictly based on their performances at club level,” he added.
The 2024 CHAN, originally postponed, is now scheduled to take place from February 1 to 28, 2025, across Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.
With the competition exclusively for players who feature in their domestic leagues, Ogunmodede’s emphasis on club performance will be crucial in shaping Nigeria’s squad for the tournament.
