Remo Stars head coach, Daniel Ogunmodede has expressed his openness to taking on a permanent role as assistant coach for the Super Eagles, should the opportunity arise.
Ogunmodede was recently appointed alongside Rangers Int’l coach, Fidelis Ilechukwu, as interim assistants to Augustine Eguavoen for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
He led Remo Stars to a second-place finish last season in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), while Ilechukwu guided Rangers to the title.
Their first assignment with the Super Eagles was a resounding success, as Nigeria secured a dominant 3-0 victory over Benin Republic, thanks to two goals from Ademola Lookman and a strike from Victor Osimhen.
A Tradition of Promoting NPFL’s Finest
For years, the Nigeria Football Federation has upheld the tradition of selecting top-performing coaches from the NPFL to serve as assistants with the national team, usually on a part-time basis.
This tradition was honored with the appointments of Ogunmodede and Ilechukwu for the AFCON qualifiers.
Ogunmodede Open to a Permanent Role
Following the victory against Benin Republic, in an interview with 54footballx, he expressed his willingness to continue in his role on a more permanent basis if the opportunity arises.
The Remo Stars handler emphasized his sense of duty toward national service and his readiness to answer the call should it come.
““Any good opportunity that comes from the national team, I can hardly say no,” Ogunmodede stated.
“Especially if it comes from the head coach or the Federation. If they want me to stay on, I’ll be more than willing to serve.”
The Super Eagles have now shifted focus to their next AFCON qualifying match against Rwanda, having touched down in Kigali on Sunday evening ahead of the crucial encounter on Tuesday.
A win in this fixture could strengthen the case for both NPFL Coaches to be considered for permanent roles with the national team.
