Ofili Slams AFN for 100m Event Exclusion

Nigerian sprinter Favour Ofili has demanded accountability from the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) after discovering she will not compete in the women’s 100m at the 2024 Olympics, despite having qualified.

Ofili took to social media to express her frustration, revealing that the AFN failed to register her for the event.

“It is with great regret that I have just been told I will not be competing in the 100 meters at this Olympic Games,” she stated.

“I qualified, but those with the AFN and NOC failed to enter me. I have worked for 4 years to earn this opportunity. For what? Integrity Unit.”

This incident adds to a series of setbacks for Nigerian athletes, following a similar situation at Tokyo 2020, where multiple athletes, including Ofili, were disqualified due to administrative failures.

“Please remember, in the last Olympic Games I was not able to compete because AFN, NADC and NOC failed to release funds for athletes to be tested, which made 14 Nigeria athletes that qualified to not compete. Now THIS,” she lamented.

Ofili also wants those responsible for the for error punished.

“If those responsible are NOT held accountable for taking this opportunity from me, neither organization can EVER be trusted in the future.”

Amidst this controversy, Ofili still hopes to participate in the 200m event, pending her registration.

This latest episode has intensified scrutiny on the management of Nigerian athletics, with calls for reforms to prevent future administrative failures.
