The FIFA has officially approved the change of international allegiance for Arthur Okonkwo, making the towering shot-stopper eligible to represent Nigeria national football team, Super Eagles.
The decision, confirmed on April 6, 2026, via FIFA’s Change of Association platform, sees Okonkwo’s registration moved from The Football Association to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), ending months of anticipation.
From England Youth Star to Super Eagles Prospect
Born on September 9, 2001, in Camden, London, to Nigerian (Igbo) parents, the 24-year-old goalkeeper, standing at an imposing 1.98–1.99m, has long been regarded as one of the brightest young prospects in goal.
Okonkwo developed through Arsenal FC’s academy after joining at just eight years old, going on to represent England at youth levels from U-15 through U-18 between 2015 and 2019.
However, with no senior cap for England, FIFA regulations allowed him to switch allegiance to Nigeria through his heritage.
Arthur Okonkwo Rise: From Arsenal to Wrexham No.1
Coming from limited first-team opportunities at Arsenal, where he made his senior debut in 2021, Okonkwo gained valuable experience on loan at Crewe Alexandra FC and SK Sturm Graz.
His career took a decisive turn following a move to Wrexham AFC in 2023.
Initially arriving on loan, he impressed enough to earn a permanent deal in 2024 following the retirement of veteran goalkeeper Ben Foster.
Since then, Okonkwo has established himself as Wrexham’s undisputed first-choice goalkeeper, playing a pivotal role in the club’s meteoric rise through the English football pyramid.
- Over 100 appearances for Wrexham
- Key figure in back-to-back promotions
- Multiple clean sheets in the Championship this season
- Among the top shot-stoppers in the division
His performances have been crucial as Wrexham push for yet another historic promotion, currently sitting in the play-off places in the Championship.
Chelle’s Influence & AFCON Setback
Okonkwo’s switch did not happen overnight.
The move followed discussions with Super Eagles head coach, Eric Chelle during the Unity Cup in London last year.
However, administrative delays meant he was unable to feature at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
Now, with FIFA approval secured, the path is finally clear for his international debut.
Boost for Super Eagles Goalkeeping Department
Okonkwo’s arrival significantly strengthens Nigeria’s goalkeeping pool, adding depth and competition to an already talented group that includes:
- Stanley Nwabali
- Maduka Okoye
- Francis Uzoho
His reflexes and consistency could make him a strong contender for the number one spot in the near future.
Reunion Possibilities & What Lies Ahead
Should he earn a call-up, Okonkwo could reunite with former Arsenal academy graduates likeAlex Iwobi andSemi Ajayi in the national team setup.
Nigeria’s upcoming international friendlies against India (May 26) and Poland (June 3) could provide the perfect stage for his long-awaited debut.
Okonkwo’s switch tells another story for Nigerian football as another diaspora talent choosing to represent the Super Eagles on the global stage.
With youth experience in England and senior consistency in the Championship, the 24-year-old arrives as a ready-made option not just for the future, but for the present.
