Nottingham Forest manager Nuno Espirito Santo has expressed delight at Taiwo Awoniyi’s return to scoring form after the Nigerian forward ended his 324-day goal drought.
Awoniyi, who came off the bench in the 88th minute, sealed Forest’s emphatic 3-0 victory over Wolves with a stoppage-time goal, his first of the season.
The strike followed earlier goals by Morgan Gibbs-White and Chris Wood.
Despite featuring in 15 league games this season, Awoniyi has struggled for minutes as he has mostly played a substitute role.
Santo commended the striker for his perseverance and positive attitude during a challenging period.
“A lot. We were delighted; especially his teammates were delighted for him – the way he celebrated and even in the dressing room,” Santo said after the game,” Santo said after the game.
“We need T. It is taking a while, but we are very happy for him. He deserves everything. He is such a nice guy.”
Awoniyi’s goal was a testament to his determination and resilience, with fans and pundits now optimistic about his potential to surpass last season’s tally of six goals and three assists in 20 appearances, provided he stays fit.
The 27-year-old will now be aiming to start in Forest’s FA Cup third-round clash against Luton Town at the City Ground on Saturday.
Monday’s win was historic for Nottingham Forest as it marked their sixth consecutive Premier League victory—the longest winning streak in the competition this season.
It is also the first time Forest have achieved six successive top-flight wins in a single campaign since the 1966-67 season.
Santo and his team will hope to maintain their remarkable form as they continue to climb the Premier League table.
