NPFL MD 36: Rivers United Spoil the Party for Plateau United, MFM FC Slip

Relegation-threatened Rivers United were only denied a famous victory in stoppage time by NPFL leaders Plateau United just as title chasers MFM FC also slipped after they lost 1-0 to Abia Warriors.

Highly-rated left winger Peter Eneji rescued the game for Plateau United a minute to full time with a belter from 25 yards after his team missed a penalty earlier in the game.

However, Plateau United remain top of the table with 62 points from 36 matches, while MFM FC are second on 59 points with two rounds of matches to be played.

Seven-time champions Enyimba stayed within distance of a continental ticket following their 4-0 victory against visiting Wikki Tourists in Calabar.

“We gave this game our all because want to play international football next year,” said coach Gbenga Ogunbote.

Meanwhile, striker Bobby Clement grabbed a double in either half for Rangers to beat Remo Stars 2-1 on the road – the only away win in last weekend’s fixtures.

The win also earned the champions a cash incentive from Enugu State sports commissioner Joseph Udedi.

In Maiduguri, Shooting Stars enhanced their chances of escaping relegation after they snatched a late equaliser through Abayomi Adebayo at home team El kanemi Warriors.

They now have 47 points and welcome front runners Akwa United to Ibadan next weekend.

The match between visiting FC Ifeanyiubah and Niger Tornadoes will be continued 8am on Monday in Lokoja after heavy rains rendered the pitch unplayable.

Ifeanyiubah were leading 1-0 before the stoppage.

The bottom five clubs are Remo Stars (29 points), Gombe United 43 points), ABS FC (46 points), Shooting Stars (47 points) and Wikki (47 points).
