Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti has defended and hope that Vinicius Jr will avoid suspension after the Brazilian forward was sent off during Los Blancos’ dramatic 2-1 victory over Valencia in La Liga on Friday.
The 24-year-old was shown a red card for slapping Valencia goalkeeper Stole Dimitrievski late in the match, an incident Ancelotti believes warranted only a yellow card.
“It wasn’t a red, it was a yellow, and that’s why we hope he will not face any suspension,” Ancelotti stated during a press conference ahead of Madrid’s upcoming Copa del Rey tie against Deportiva Minera on Monday.
The incident added to an emotionally charged match for Vinicius Jr, who has endured a challenging period in Spain, marked by recurrent racial abuse from opposing fans.
Earlier this year, three Valencia supporters were sentenced to prison for racially abusing the Brazilian during a La Liga match at Mestalla Stadium in May 2023.
“It’s difficult being in his shoes,” Ancelotti said, empathizing with the forward.
“It’s not easy to endure everything he goes through, including the insults. It’s not simple, but he’s trying to improve.”
Ancelotti confirmed that Vinicius Jr had apologized to his teammates for his actions but emphasized the need to move forward.
“He’s upset about it and has apologized. We need to look ahead. We hope he won’t face a suspension,” he added.
Vinicius Jr’s case has reignited discussions about racism in Spanish football, with the Brazilian often at the center of controversy both on and off the pitch.
His on-field battles have often been marred by verbal abuse.
Real Madrid have announced plans to appeal Vinicius Jr’s dismissal, with hopes of clearing him to play in their upcoming fixtures.
Meanwhile, the team is set to face Deportiva Minera in the last 32 of the Copa del Rey on Monday, with the forward’s availability yet to be determined.
