Nigeria head coach Gernot Rohr Says Madagascar deserved to their victory over his side in their final Group B clash in Alexandria Stadium on Sunday.
Madagascar who are appearing in the African Cup of Nations for the first time in their history, secured a famous win over Nigeria and ended the Super Eagles 13 matches unbeaten in the competition since 2013.
Lalaina Nomenjanahary and Carolus Andriamahitsinoro scored in the 13th and 53rd minute respectively to help the tiny African finished the Group winner.
Speaking after the game, Rohr said his boys played bellow their usual standard, and was not surprised by the result because of the opponents’ recent rising profile.
“We lost to a good team because Madagascar was the first to qualify for the tournament and there is no shame in losing to such a team,” Rohr said after the game.
“Madagascar was the better team today. We started with giving them a gift and after, we could not find a solution. We made five changes because we wanted to give a rest to some players and also preserve those with cards.
“Sometimes it happens when you are already qualified; the players are relaxed and playing easy.”
