No place for Aribo in new look Southampton midfield under Nathan Jones

Joe Aribo watched from the bench as Southampton beat Lincoln City 2-1 to reach EFL Cup quarter final on Tuesday.

Aribo who played almost every game under previous coach Ralph Hasenhuttl was left on the bench all through the game.

The new gaffer Nathan Jones opted to start with midfield of five, with Kyle Walker Peters, James Ward-Prowse, Ansley Maitland-Niles, Mohammed Elyounoussi and Roman Perraud.

The decision proved to be a good one as the Saints came from behind to beat their visitors 2-1 at the Saint Mary.

Southampton fell behind early when goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu failed to deal with Maitland-Niles’ sliced clearance and allowed it to roll over the line.

But Adams scored either side of the break to guide Southampton through to the quarter final.

The two goals represent the first time Southampton have scored more than one in a game since their win over Chelsea on 30 August.

It is the first time they have reached the quarter-finals of the competition since they lost to Manchester United in the 2017 final.
