Nkechi Obi Aims to Elevate Women’s Football League Amid Financial Challenges

Nigerian Women’s Football League (NWFL) Chairperson, Madam Nkechi Obi, has outlined her plans to build on the successes of the previous season while addressing the challenges ahead.

Obi expressed her commitment to improving the league and ensuring that it continues to grow, despite the financial difficulties facing the country.

“We’ll build on what we have set,” she emphasized, highlighting the importance of continuity and growth.

Obi also revealed several initiatives that are planned for the upcoming season, some of which were unfortunately delayed in the past due to various reasons. One key focus will be enhancing the visibility of the league through streaming platforms and television broadcasts.

“I’m hoping that the financial challenges will not be so bad. We all know what we’re going through as a country. So, if there’s a creative way, we can put some of our material, which we tested from the Super 6, to see if we can use streaming platforms. We’ll see if we can get more matches on TV, on streaming platforms, so that more people, wherever they are in the world, can watch us,” she explained.

Improving officiating standards, bettering terms and conditions for players, and engaging in community programs focused on football and the girl child are also high on her agenda.

“We’ll improve on our officiating, see if we can get better terms and conditions for our players, and then see if we can do community engagement programs, football and the girl child. So, we build on the foundation we’ve made and add one or two more things,” Obi added.

The NWFL boss is optimistic about the future of women’s football in Nigeria and is determined to overcome the hurdles to make the league stronger and more accessible to fans worldwide.
