Nigerian players across top leagues in the diaspora were in action this weekend for their respective clubs.
While some delivered goal contribution for their teams, others put in solid performances, and a few experienced tough moments.
Here’s a recap of how they fared:
Victor Osimhen (Galatasaray)
The goals have finally started flowing for Victor Osimhen at Galatasaray.
After joining the Turkish giants on loan from Napoli, Osimhen immediately made an impact by providing assists in his early games.
However, the long-awaited goals came this past weekend when Galatasaray faced Kasimpasa.
Osimhen opened the scoring, scoring his first goal for the club, and doubled the lead just eight minutes later with a clinical second strike.
Despite Mario Icardi adding a third goal, Galatasaray squandered their 3-0 advantage, eventually drawing 3-3. Nevertheless, they remain top of the table with 19 points.
William Troost-Ekong (Al Kholood)
Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong also got on the scoresheet, bagging his first goal for Al Kholood since his move from PAOK this summer.
Facing reigning champions Al Hilal, Al Kholood couldn’t avoid defeat as Al Hilal scored four goals in a 10-minute.
However, Al Kholood mounted a late response, with Hammam Al Hammami pulling one back in the 71st minute. Troost-Ekong then added a second, converting a penalty three minutes from time to narrow the deficit to 4-2.
Al Kholood, newly promoted to the Saudi Pro League, sit 12th on the table.
Wilfred Ndidi (Leicester City)
It was a bittersweet outing for Wilfred Ndidi in the Premier League as Leicester City faced Arsenal.
Leicester trailed 2-0 at halftime but mounted a spirited comeback, with Ndidi providing an assist for their first goal in a 2-2 tie.
However, in the dying moments of stoppage time, Ndidi conceded an own goal, handing Arsenal the lead. Minutes later, Kai Havertz sealed the win for the Gunners with another goal, making it 4-2.
Despite the own goal, Ndidi has been in fine form this season, contributing 4 assists in 6 league matches.
Tom Dele-Bashiru (Watford)
In the Championship, Watford secured a dramatic 2-1 victory over Sunderland at Vicarage Road, thanks to Tom Dele-Bashiru’s late penalty.
The former Nigeria U20 international coolly slotted home in the 84th minute, ensuring the Hornets took all three points.
Dele-Bashiru, who recently spoke about the need to add more goals to his game, now has two goals for the season.
His first came during a 1-1 draw against Coventry City on matchday 5, and his latest strike suggests he is well on his way to achieving that goal.
Chidera Ejuke & Kelechi Iheanacho (Sevilla)
Chidera Ejuke continued his impressive form for Sevilla during their 1-1 draw against Athletic Bilbao at the Estadio San Mamés. Ejuke was key in the build-up to Alex Padilla’s own goal, which salvaged a point for Sevilla late in the game.
In contrast, Kelechi Iheanacho had a frustrating outing. The former Leicester City forward played 58 minutes but struggled to make an impact, still searching for his first goal since joining Sevilla.
Victor Boniface & Nathan Tella (Bayer Leverkusen)
In the Bundesliga, Bayer Leverkusen’s Nigerian duo, Victor Boniface and Nathan Tella, featured in their team’s 1-1 draw against Bayern Munich.
Boniface started the match, while Tella was introduced in the 78th minute.
Leverkusen took the lead in the 31st minute through Robert Andrich, but Bayern Munich equalized shortly after.
Tella had a chance to restore Leverkusen’s lead, but his shot was easily saved by Manuel Neuer. Leverkusen are currently third in the Bundesliga, three points behind leaders Bayern Munich.
