Nigerian Boxers Fall Short in Olympic Qualifiers, Miss Out on Paris 2024

  • Nigeria will not have Boxers at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games

  • Six boxers competed in the Olympic Qualifiers

  • The Qualifiers in Thailand was the second Boxing qualifying tournament for the Summer Games

All six Nigerian boxers who competed in the 2nd World Boxing Olympic Qualification in Thailand have returned home without securing a ticket to the 2024 Olympic Games.

The final blow came when Adeshina Zainab, the last remaining contender, was defeated by Finland’s Kaivo-Oja Pihla in the women’s 50kg category on Sunday in Bangkok.

The Nigeria Boxing Federation had high hopes for their female pugilists, believing they had a stronger chance of qualifying.

Six Nigerian boxers registered to compete in various weight categories: 50kg, 57kg, 66kg, 75kg, and +92kg.

Despite their efforts, the Nigerian boxers were unable to secure any spots for the Paris 2024 Games.

This follows a similar outcome at the first Window of the Olympic Games Boxing Qualifiers in Italy, where none of the 67 African competitors managed to qualify.

While Nigerian boxing will not be represented in Paris, Team Nigeria will still have participants in several other sports, including Athletics, Badminton, Women’s Basketball, Women’s Football, Table Tennis, Weightlifting, and Wrestling.
