Nigeria’s women’s 4x400m relay team secured gold at the African Championships in Douala, but, fell short of qualifying for the 2024 Paris Olympics.
The quartet of Ella Onojuvwevwo, Patience Okon-George, Esther Elo Joseph, and Omolara Ogunmakinju ran an impressive 3:27.31.
However, they needed to clock under 3:26.90 to surpass Cuba and secure a spot at the Olympics, missing the mark by 0.41 seconds.
Despite their victory over Botswana and Zambia to clinch the gold medal, the narrow miss on Olympic qualification was a disappointment.
Nigeria needed a faster time to overtake the Dominican Republic, which held the 16th spot necessary for Olympic qualification.
