Benin Republic head coach, Gernot Rohr acknowledged that his team was no match for Nigeria after suffering a heavy 3-0 defeat in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations Qualifiers, on Saturday.
The Super Eagles dominated, and Ademola Lookman score twice while Victor Osimhen added another goal.
Speaking to the media after the game, Rohr admitted that Nigeria’s squad was significantly stronger and had been the clear favorites going into the match.
“We cannot compare the two teams,” Rohr stated. “What didn’t work is that we don’t have the same resources as the Nigerian team. When you look at their squad, these are all high-level players who play regularly for their clubs.”
“Unfortunately, we have players who don’t get much playing time at their clubs, so the difference is clear.”
Benin Republic had managed to beat Nigeria 2-1 in June, a result Rohr said gave the Super Eagles extra motivation for revenge.
“The stars made the difference today,” Rohr said.
“Ekong and Osimhen were missing the last time we met, and their presence in Uyo was felt. Nigeria has resources that we simply don’t have.
“Our focus now is to finish second in the group, despite the defensive struggles that led to us conceding three goals.”
The defeat leaves Benin Republic bottom of their qualification group.
