Nigeria’s Super Falcons faced a tough start to their Paris 2024 Olympic Games campaign, falling 1-0 to Brazil in their opening group game in Bordeaux.
Nigeria displayed a strong defensive performance but was unable to overcome Brazil’s attack.
Goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie made several crucial saves, but the Brazilian attack, led by Marta and Gabi Nunes, proved too strong.
Gabi Nunes scored the only goal of the match in the 37th minute, firing a long-range shot past Nnadozie after receiving an assist from Marta.
The Super Falcons had their chances, with Brazilian goalkeeper Lorena denying goal attempts from Rasheedat Ajibade and Christy Ucheibe.
In the final moments of the game, Ajibade made a goal-bound move but was brought down by the Brazilian defense, preventing Nigeria from finding an equalizer.
Randy Waldrum’s side will need to regroup and refocus as they prepare to face Spain next, the Europeans had earlier defeated Japan 2-1.
Brazil and Spain currently lead Group C of the Paris 2024 Olympics, while Nigeria stands at the bottom.
The Super Falcons aim to secure their first win in the next match to keep their hopes alive in the tournament.
