“Character and determination missing from current crop of players”- Ex-Eaglets captain, Olusegun Fetuga
Former Golden Eaglets captain, Olusegun Fetuga has adviced players of Nigeria’s U17 national team to be highly disciplined and focused when the U17 world cup commences in Brazil from the 26 October to 17 November 2019.
“They have to very disciplined in and out of the field, and they should know what they want to achieve, and help carry the trophy which will take us back to our glory days”
Fetuga who won silver medal for Nigeria at Canada ‘87, also identified ‘character’ and ‘the determination to win for Nigeria’ as the winning ingredient missing from the current crop of Nigerian football players.
“It is the character and determination that you want to win for Nigeria, I don’t really find it in this present team, if you look at other african countries their character towards the game is very different, If you watch our videos back then you’ll know that somethinng is missing and these are the things other African nations are using to become champion” Fetuga added.
Xraying Golden Eaglets group opponents in Group B, the former player said ” I think we should look into the South America team because we play the same way and they might pull a surprise.” Nigeria will face Hungary, Australia and Ecuador.
Olusegun Fetuga wore the captain’s armband when the Golden Eaglets featured at the third edition of the 1989 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Scotland, shedding more light on the 89′ world cup “we really prepared well which helped us, we were very determined and we played for each other which is very important for the team, my greatest advice for the current golden eaglets is to play as a team and not be selfish, because if you play as a team no team can break you, they just have to be lucky if they do.”
Few years after he captained the Golden Eaglets to the World Cup at Scotland ‘89, while playing in the Belgian league he sustained an injury that ruled him out of action for some years, on his return he never fully recovered and eventually settled for sports managament and currently help young players achieve their football dream.
