NFF Sets World Cup, AFCON Targets for Finidi George

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has set ambitious targets for newly appointed Super Eagles head coach, Finidi George.

According to NFF President Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau, Finidi is tasked with leading Nigeria to at least the quarter-finals of the 2026 World Cup.

In a statement made during his appearance on the popular football show “Soccer Africa” in South Africa,

Gusau clarified that Finidi has signed a two-year contract, contrary to earlier reports suggesting a one-year deal.

Besides the World Cup goal, George is also expected to secure qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and guide the team to a minimum of a semi-final finish in the tournament.

“The key thing is, in every contract there must be some indices and some targets that you must put in place for somebody in order for him to get optimal performance, and the first target is to qualify the team for next year’s nations cup and to get to at least the semi finals of the nations cup, as well as qualify the team to the world cup and to get us the target of playing in the quarter finals of the world cup.”

“So these are the main targets we put in place for him in the contract, and by the grace of God, we are working hard to see how we can achieve that,” he stated.

Gusau stressed that, the objectives underscore the federation’s confidence in George’s capabilities and their high expectations for the Super Eagles’ performance on the global stage.

Finidi George will kickstart his tenure with the FIFA World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin Republic next month.
