Ex international Daniel Amokachi has criticized the Nigeria Football Federation for how they handle the new contract of Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr.
Rohr was hired by the Nigerian FA in 2016 as a replacement for Sunday Oliseh who resigned from the Super Eagles job following irreconcilable differences with the NFF.
In February 2020, Rohr put pen to paper for a contract extension which will keep in charge of the Eagles until after the 2022 FIFA World Cup, and should the German avoid sack before that period, he will become one of the longest-serving coaches in Nigeria.
However, Rohr came under increasing pressure from some sections of the media and ex-internationals, after his team failed to win any of the four matches they played in 2020, including the disappointing 4 – 4 home draw against minors Sierra Leone.
In a chat with brila.net, Amokachi who earned 44 caps for Nigeria said the Amaju Pinnick led NFF board made a huge blunder hiring the Franco-German in the first place when Nigeria has capable hands that can thinker the team.
“For the administration to bring somebody like Oliseh and not giving him time because he’s Nigerian and they let go. To bring in somebody like Amuneke and not giving him time then they let him go. Then you bring a new Coach where those two Coaches are far better than him; pedigree-wise and portfolio-wise. But still, they gave the machinery a lot of money, $60 plus with all the bonuses, if they play two matches in a month, then you’re talking over $100,000. ” He told brila.net.
The former Everton of England also revealed to brila.net that, the Nigeria Football governing body was naive to have allowed a $2million compensation clause to be inserted in the new contract Gernot Rohr signed in February.
“And then at the end of the day, you put a $2m clause on a coach that has never won anything. A coach that came from Burkina Faso to Tunisia then to Nigeria and you put a $2m clause, that’s the first I’m hearing such.” He told brila.net.
“If you were bringing Guardiola you can put $10m if he says he wants it because you know who he is; he has won laurels. But for a coach that has not done anything, not achieved anything and you put a $2m clause? There’s a lot of failure in that. I’ll not rate them (NFF) out of 10, but all these things I’ve broken down will tell anybody with commonsense where I’m coming from.” He concluded.
