The Nigeria Football Federation, has strongly condemned the racist abuse directed at Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey following Fulham’s victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford in the FA Cup round of 16.
Bassey played a crucial role in the match, scoring Fulham’s only goal before they triumphed 4-3 on penalties.
The 25-year-old also delivered an outstanding defensive performance, helping his team restrict United to a single goal in regulation time.

However, he was subjected to racist and homophobic abuse on social media after the game.
The Fulham centre-back shared a series of hateful messages he received in his direct messages, exposing the level of discrimination he faced.
In response, the London club swiftly issued a statement condemning the abuse and reiterating their full support for the Nigerian international.
“Fulham Football Club is utterly appalled at the racist and homophobic abuse received and subsequently shared by Calvin Bassey on social media after yesterday’s FA Cup tie against Manchester United,” the club wrote.
“We strongly condemn this abhorrent behaviour, which has no place in football or society. Such actions are entirely unacceptable, and we stand in full support of Calvin Bassey, who will continue to receive our full backing.
“We will do everything in our power to work with the relevant authorities to identify the perpetrators of these vile messages and take the strongest action against them.”
Meanwhile, the NFF also issued a statement on X, expressing their stance against discrimination and pledging support for Bassey.
“The NFF stands firmly against all forms of discrimination, including racial abuse, and fully supports @CalvinBassey in the face of these unacceptable actions,” the statement read.
This incident is yet another reminder of the persistent issue of racism in football, with black players frequently targeted online.
Football stars including Marcus Rashford and Bukayo Saka have previously been victims of similar abuse.
As of the time of writing, there has been no official comment from the FA regarding the abuse Bassey suffered.
