Austin Eguavoen will continue in interim capacity as Super Eagles head coach for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers in October.Eguavoen, who was called in to fill the vacant Super Eagles coaching role for this month’s AFCON qualifiers against Bénin Republic and Rwanda, also doubles as Technical Director of the NFF.
Nigeria will play a doubler, on October 11&15, against Libya who also named a new coach, Nasser Al-Hadiri, after Milutin Sredojevic was reportedly sacked following a poor start to the AFCON qualifying campaign – with a draw and defeat to Rwanda and Benin Republic respectively.
The latest development was announced, Thursday, following a resolution by the NFF Executive.
Alongside Eguavoen, Fidelis Ilechukwu and Daniel Ogunmodede will also continue as assistants, while Tajudeen Baruwa remains Goalkeeping coach.
The Super Eagles have been without a substantive coach since the resignation of Finidi George, who quit after a fallout with the Federation.
Meanwhile, the NFF has also named the same coaching crew to take charge of Nigeria’s qualifiers for the African Nations Championship (CHAN).
With the qualifiers set to get underway next month, no appointment was made for the vacant position.
Nigeria has failed to make an appearance at the CHAN since 2018, and it’ll be Eguavoen’s first attempt to qualify Nigeria for the competition.
The CHAN is held biannually, and the competition is for National team players who are based in the National Leagues or Africa.
In 2014 the CHAN Eagles won bronze, and we tone further in 2018 to finish as runner-up behind Morocco.
