Matt Ritchie’s second-half strike was enough for Newcastle United to knock out Manchester United 1-0 in the Premier League on Sunday.
The Red Devils had the best chance of the first hour when Antonio Valencia freed Alexis Sanchez, who skipped around the Magpies keeper Martin Dubravka but his finish was blocked on the line by Florian Lejeune.
However, it was Newcastle who took the lead at St James’ Park when a free-kick is pumped into the area by Jonjo Shelvey and the ball is flicked on for Dwight Gayle to produce a lovely backheel lay-off to set up Ritchie to smash into the bottom corner.
The win for Newcastle has further given a boost to Manchester City’s lead as they are now 16points above second placed United…
