New Coach Must Qualify Super Eagles for World Cup – Okpala

Former Super Eagles assistant coach Sylvanus Okpala insists that any foreign Technical Adviser appointed must ensure Nigeria qualifies for the World Cup.

In a Brila.net interview, he stated that failing to qualify would be unacceptable.

“The only excuse you have is to qualify us,” Okpala stated. “Because anybody you are bringing in today, you are bringing him in to qualify Nigeria for the World Cup. There are no excuses.”

He made it clear that if the new coach fails, it would have been better to keep the previous coach.

“If that person does not qualify Nigeria to the World Cup, he has failed. So the issue that somebody has spoiled something before then he came in, why not leave that person who has spoiled something to continue?,” he said.

Okpala on the importance of qualifying, said, “Whoever is coming in must have to qualify us to the World Cup. If he doesn’t do that, he has failed. There is no excuse for him to say that he was… No, no, no, no, no. That person must come to qualify us to the World Cup.”

He warned of the consequences, stating, “We cannot afford not to flag the Nigerian flag at the World Cup for the second time. It will be a disaster. And there will be a lot of crises in Nigerian football if that happens.”
