Super Eagles midfielder, Wilfred Ndidi has surpassed Nigerian football legend Jay-Jay Okocha in Premier League assists.
Ndidi’s two assists in Leicester City’s 2-2 draw against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park brought his Premier League total to 12, breaking Okocha’s long-standing record of 10 assists.
Following the international break, club football returned with Ndidi playing a pivotal role for his side.
Leicester City initially held a 2-0 lead, but failed to secure their first Premier League win of the season as Jean-Philippe Mateta converted a last-minute penalty, preventing the Foxes from taking all three points.
Ndidi Shines in an Advanced Role
In an unusual tactical shift, Ndidi was deployed as an attacking midfielder, a role he performed with impressive authority.
His performance in the first half was particularly noteworthy, as he demonstrated his adaptability and vision in the advanced position.
His first assist came when he intercepted possession from Adam Wharton before threading a precise pass to Jamie Vardy.
Vardy capitalized on the opportunity, rounding goalkeeper Dean Henderson to open the scoring for Leicester.
Ndidi’s second assist was equally impressive. In the second half, he showed remarkable composure, setting up Stephy Mavididi for a volley after Palace failed to clear a cross, giving Leicester a two-goal cushion.
Breaking a Nigerian Legend’s Record
With his two assists against Crystal Palace, Ndidi surpassed the iconic Jay-Jay Okocha in Premier League assists.
Okocha, during his time at Bolton Wanderers, registered 10 assists in 125 Premier League appearances, along with 14 goals.
Ndidi now holds 12 assists in his Premier League career, further cementing his reputation as one of Nigeria’s finest exports to England.
Despite Ndidi’s brilliant form, Leicester City continues to search for their first Premier League win of the season.
