The Super Falcons of Nigeria suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat against Brazil in their opening match of the Paris 2024 Women’s football event.

Making their return to the competition after a 16-year absence, the former African champions couldn’t mount a comeback against an uninspired Brazilian side.

Martha’s goal in the 36th minute was disallowed by VAR for offside, but Brazil soon took the lead as Gabi Nunez capitalized on a well-timed run into the box, firing an unstoppable shot past Nigerian goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie.

Despite creating some decent chances, the Super Falcons struggled to find the back of the net against a solid Brazilian defence.

Meanwhile, Spain currently tops the group after defeating the 2011 world champions Japan 2-1 in the opening game of this first-round section.

Next up for the Super Falcons is a clash with Spain on July 28th, followed by a match against Japan on July 31st.
