Crystal Palace’s rising star, Asher Agbinone, has revealed that he’s not only eligible to play for England but also for two other national teams: Nigeria and Congo.
The 19-year-old, whose father hails from Nigeria and mother from Congo, can choose between the Super Eagles and the Red Devils.
After progressing through the ranks at Crystal Palace where he has been since the U9 level, Agbinone made his Premier League debut against Nottingham Forest in October 2024.
The forward has since been tipped as a future star for Palace, earning 14 first-team call-ups during the first half of the season.
However, Agbinone’s future may see him take a detour for now, following his loan to League Two club Gillingham until the end of the season, giving him a chance to gain regular playing time.
Despite his promising career trajectory, Agbinone remains uncommitted to any international side, keeping his options open.
Speaking to Palace TV, Agbinone acknowledged his multicultural background, saying:
“South London is a very diverse place. My mom’s from Congo, my dad is from Nigeria.
“Whenever someone asks me where I am from, I’ll tell them where I’m from probably. I can never forget where I am from, it shaped who I am today.”
He signed his first professional contract in 2022 and made a strong impact at youth level last season, contributing nine goals and one assist in 20 appearances.
Agbinone’s situation echoes that of former Crystal Palace academy graduate Victor Moses.
Moses represented Nigeria and became one of the standout players during their Africa Cup of Nations victory in 2013.
With Agbinone’s versatility and skills, an early approach to secure his commitment to Nigeria could prove crucial for the national team’s future.
Will Nigeria seize the opportunity, or will another nation claim the rising star?
Time will tell but the Super Eagles would be wise to make their move for the young winger sooner rather than later.
