Mohamed Salah is frustrated over the lack of a formal contract offer from Liverpool, casting doubt on his future at the club.
Despite his outstanding performances this season, including a brace in Liverpool’s 3-2 comeback win over Southampton, the Egyptian forward remains unsure whether he will stay beyond next summer.
Speaking to the press after the victory at St Mary’s on Sunday, Salah was candid about his situation and how disappointed his that talks have yet to progress.
“Well, we are almost in December and I haven’t received any offers yet to stay in the club, [so] I’m probably more out than in.”
Salah, whose contract is set to expire in June 2025, has been a central figure in Liverpool’s attack for years.
He is currently the club’s top scorer with 12 goals across all competitions this season, but as the clock ticks towards January and the possibility of negotiations with foreign clubs, the forward remains in the dark about his future at Anfield.
“I’ve been in the club for many years. There is no club like this. But in the end, it is not in my hands,” Salah continued.
“As I said before, it is December and I haven’t received anything yet about my future. I love the fans. The fans love me. In the end, it is not in my hands or the fans’ hands. Let’s wait and see. Of course, [no offer is disappointing], yeah.”
While Salah’s future is uncertain, discussions between the player’s representatives and Liverpool have been “ongoing and positive.”
However, contract talks with such a high-profile player are expected to be complex and time-consuming.
Salah’s current deal, signed in June 2022, made him Liverpool’s highest-paid player. Yet with his contract nearing its end, the 32-year-old could speak to clubs abroad starting in January, leaving Liverpool with a potentially difficult decision to make.
The forward has been frequently linked with a move to the Saudi Pro League, but Salah was quick to shut down those rumors, stating, “I’m not going to retire soon so I’m just playing, focusing on the season.”
Salah is not the only key player with an expiring contract at Liverpool. Club captain Virgil van Dijk and vice-captain Trent Alexander-Arnold are also in the same position, adding further uncertainty to the future of Liverpool’s core players.
As the new year approaches, Salah’s next steps remain unclear, with fans and pundits alike eagerly awaiting any news of a potential offer from the club.
For now, the Egyptian winger’s focus remains firmly on achieving success on the pitch.
“I’m just playing, focusing on the season, and I’m trying to win the Premier League and hopefully the Champions League as well,” he concluded.
