Mikel Obi: Representing Nigeria Has Elevated Lookman’s Game

Former Nigeria and Chelsea midfielder, John Mikel Obi has lauded Ademola Lookman’s decision to play for Nigeria rather than England, calling it the right choice.

In an interview with Bein Sports, Mikel stressed that Africa should not be viewed as a secondary option by players born abroad.

Mikel, who made his mark at Chelsea, applauded Lookman’s sense of patriotism for committing to the Nigerian national team, despite his eligibility to play for England.

Lookman had previously represented England at the U17 and U20 levels, even helping the U20 side win the World Cup.

“I think Lookman made the right move by switching early and saying, ‘I’m going to represent my African country, I’m going to play for Nigeria,’” Mikel said.

Ademola Lookman favored to win the 2024 African POTY Award.

“He’s having a fantastic season and played brilliantly in the last AFCON. He’s a terrific player, and credit to him for his decision.”

Since switching allegiance to Nigeria in 2022, the Atalanta forward has become an important part of the Super Eagles squad, scoring eight goals in 25 appearances for the team.
