Mikel ‘Not ready’ to play Super Eagles matches for now – Rohr admits

Super Eagles Technical Adviser Gernot Rohr has been forced to admit that his captain Mikel does not want to represent the Super Eagles for now.

Mikel and fellow midfielder Ogenyi Onazi were two of the high profile absentees from Rohr’s latest squad for next month’s 2019 AFCON qualifier against South Africa, and a friendly against Uganda three days later in Nigeria.

Mikel has not played for Nigeria since the World Cup earlier this year, despite playing for his club Tianjin TEDA, and Rohr told ESPN that the decision was down to the player.

The international future of the Chelsea legend has been up in the air after he made himself unavailable for selection for the three Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Seychelles and Libya.

”Mikel told me that he will tell me when he will be ready to come back. He didn’t tell me yet. So I wait,” said Rohr.

“I hope that we can go with him to AFCON and win it for him.”
Mikel last wore a Super Eagles jersey in their 2-1 loss to Argentina in a group game at the 2018 World Cup.
The 31-year-old has earned 85 caps for the senior national team since he debuted against Libya thirteen years ago.
