Former AC Milan goalkeeper, Dida has advised Nigeria and Udinese shot-stopper Maduka Okoye to remain diligent and focused if he aims to reach football’s pinnacle.

Okoye’s message was: “Ciao Nelson, I think you already know that I am a big fan of yours, I hope that one day we can meet. I hope that you have heard of me, that you have seen my saves and that you can help me grow and reach your level. This is my wish. Greetings,” Okoye said.

Dida has now responded, offering encouraging words and some valuable advice.

“He is a goalkeeper who can do a lot in this championship, one thing I told him is that this is a tough championship, it is not easy, there are many things off the pitch that you have to manage,” Dida stated.

“He must have the ability to keep his mind only for his job and for what he is capable of doing, so a lot of training, work and work, my advice is always that.

“Work certainly pays off, he is a goalkeeper that I like a lot, who can do a lot in this championship here.”

Okoye, 25, has experienced both highs and lows in his career but is now getting back on track, following his struggles at Watford and losing his starting spot in the National team.

Having rediscovered his confidence, Okoye is beginning to regain his status as a key player. He has become an important figure for Udinese, where he replaced Marco Silvestri in the first team last season, keeping five clean sheets in 21 league games.

So far this season, he has made six appearances for his Serie A club, but faces stiff competition in the Super Eagles with Chippa United’s, Stanley Nwabali currently the first choice.
