Once considered a Premier League misfit, Africa Footballer of the Year Ademola Lookman credits Atalanta for creating the perfect environment that allowed him to develop into a feared forward on the global stage.
Lookman endured a difficult start to his professional journey, struggling to make an impact at Premier League clubs Everton, Fulham, and Leicester City.
A disappointing two-year spell at Bundesliga side RB Leipzig further hampered his progress.
However, his move to Atalanta in 2022 proved to be the turning point.
The 27-year-old has since evolved into one of the most lethal forwards in world football.
In his debut season with Atalanta, Lookman scored 13 goals in 31 Serie A appearances.
His second season saw even more remarkable numbers, as he registered 17 goals and 10 assists in 45 games across all competitions during the 2023/24 campaign.
Continuing his impressive form, the Nigeria international has already scored 11 goals in 19 appearances this season for Gian Piero Gasperini’s side.
Reflecting on his success, Lookman attributed much of his growth to the environment provided by Atalanta.
“I think the environment that the club (Atalanta) gave me has been very key to obviously my growth as a player,” Lookman told Flashscore.
“And also, just timing, you know, I’ve always believed in myself and to be able to achieve great things. But, yeah, the time has come and, you know, just blessed to be here.”
The winger’s transformation reached its peak on Monday night in Marrakech, Morocco, when he was crowned Africa’s best player at the 2024 CAF Awards.
Lookman’s journey from struggles in England and Germany to global recognition in Italy is a testament to resilience and finding the right environment for growth.
