The Libyan national football team continued their training, on Monday, evening despite Nigeria’s withdrawal from their scheduled Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match.
The Nigerian Football Federation pulled out of the match, citing poor treatment of their players upon arrival in Libya on Sunday.
The Nigerian team was left stranded for over 16 hours without access to food, water, or internet.
Photos of the Super Eagles sleeping on benches went viral on Monday morning, drawing attention to the situation.
Tensions escalated when the Nigerian players expressed concerns for their safety and requested immediate return to their home country.
In contrast, the Libyan Football Federation (LFF) shared photos of their team continuing preparations for the match, which was originally set for Tuesday.
The LFF responded to Nigeria’s withdrawal with a strongly-worded statement, condemning the NFF’s decision and threatening legal action.
The statement, published by The Libya Observer, accused the NFF of failing to cooperate in organizing the match and contributing to the current confusion.
“The Libyan Football Federation condemns the measures taken by the Nigerian Football Federation by refusing to play the Libya-Nigeria match in the African Cup of Nations qualifiers scheduled for Tuesday, October 15, and will take all legal measures to protect the interests of the Libyan national football team,” the statement read.
The LFF also criticized Nigeria for not cooperating during both the first and second leg matches, noting that the challenges faced by the Libyan team in the first leg were much more severe than those currently being reported by the Nigerian side.
