After nearly 20 hours of being stranded at a Libyan airport, the Super Eagles have finally arrived at the Malam Aminu Kano International Airport in Kano State.
The Super Eagles endured harsh conditions ahead of their 2025 AFCON qualifier in Libya, with players, pilots, and personnel left without food, water, or a place to rest for over 18 hours.
The football world has widely condemned Libya’s actions, describing the treatment as unsportsmanlike.
FIFPRO, the global union for professional football players, issued a statement on X (formerly Twitter), saying:
“The Super Eagles were held at an abandoned airport in Libya for over 15 hrs without food.
#FIFPRO calls on all relevant authorities to prioritise their immediate safety and respect their decisions. Every player deserves to compete in a safe environment.””
Prominent media outlets, including Sky Sports, ESPN, and Fabrizio Romano, have also reported on the incident, amplifying global calls for accountability and fair treatment in sports.
Meanwhile, the Confederation of African Football, has initiated steps to address the issue. The federation stated it is actively engaging both Libyan and Nigerian authorities following reports of the distressing conditions faced by the team.
CAF also confirmed that the incident is now under investigation by its Disciplinary Board.
