Leon Balogun targets Bundesliga return

Super Eagles defender Leon Balogun says he will welcome the idea of returning to Germany in order to play in the Bundesliga before calling time on his career.

The 31-year-old played for only German clubs until the summer of 2018 when he linked up with English Premier League outfit, Brighton & Hove Albion.

The Nigeria international found game time hard to come by with the Seagulls and subsequently joined Wigan Athletic on loan in January.

The German-born defender seems to have been enjoying a new lease of life at the club after making five consecutive appearances before the league was put on hold back in March.

Balogun will see his contract at Brighton expire at the end of next month and that will make him become a subject of speculation in the summer.

The former Mainz 05 of Germany player has said he’s looking forward to playing in the Bundesliga again.

“Germany is my home, I would always think about it,”  Balogun told Kicker.

“I’m still fit. Even if I turn 32 in summer, I still have a few years in my legs. I would also like to continue the experience of England, but the bottom line is that it is nowhere like at home.”

Balogun was part of the Super Eagles team that won bronze at the last AFCON in Egypt and earned a recall back to the Nigerian national team for the 2021 Afcon qualifying match against Sierra Leone.
