Kenya’s Ruth Chepngetich Sets New Women’s Marathon World Record

Ruth Chepngetich is delighted to make history at the 2024 Chicago Marathon.

The Kenyan made marathon history by setting a new women’s world record at the 2024 Chicago Marathon, finishing in an astonishing 2 hours, 9 minutes, and 57 seconds.

This time shattered the previous record, held by Ethiopia’s Tigst Assefa, by nearly two minutes.

Assefa had set the former record just a month earlier at the 2023 Berlin Marathon with a time of 2 hours, 11 minutes, and 53 seconds.

Chepngetich’s performance makes her the first woman ever to complete a marathon in under 2 hours and 10 minutes.

“I feel so great, I’m proud of myself. This is my dream come true,” said Chepngetich, the 2019 world marathon champion. “I’ve been working hard with the world record in mind, and now I’ve achieved it.”

This win marks Chepngetich’s third Chicago Marathon victory. In 2022, she came close to breaking Brigid Kosgei’s then-world record, missing it by just 14 seconds.

The Chicago Marathon course has been the site of four of the five fastest women’s marathon times in the last six years.
