Super Eagles defender, Kenneth Omeruo has officially parted ways with Turkish club Kasimpasa, bringing an end to his latest stint with the Istanbul-based side. Â
The 31-year-old terminated his contract by mutual consent and is now a free agent as he looks for a fresh challenge.Â
Omeruo, who recently recovered from a long-term injury, has been sidelined for most of the current campaign. Â
Confirming his departure to Afrik-Foot, the experienced centre-back stated:Â Â
“Yes, it is true I have terminated my contract with the club. It was a mutual one, and I wish the club all the best.”
“It has not been easy being out injured, but I am back now and raring to go. Right now, I am working on a few options, and when the time is right, I will let you know my next step.”
A Rollercoaster Journey with Kasimpasa
Omeruo first joined Kasimpasa in 2015 on a season-long loan from Chelsea, where he was highly rated but struggled to break into the first team. Despite impressing in Turkey, injuries and financial constraints prevented the club from making his move permanent. Â
In 2017, he returned for another loan stint before securing a permanent transfer in July 2023 from Spanish side Leganés for a reported €1 million.Â
However, injuries once again hampered his progress, limiting him to just five league appearances before being sidelined in October. Â
His last match for Kasimpasa came in a dramatic 3-3 draw against Galatasaray, after which he spent months recovering.Â
He resumed training in early January, hoping to make an impact in the second half of the season. His return was also expected to boost Nigeria ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in March. Â
The Super Eagles currently sit fifth in Group C with just three points from their opening matches and face a crucial double-header against Rwanda and Zimbabwe.
What’s Next for Omeruo?
With his club future now uncertain, Omeruo is searching for a new team before the winter transfer window closes in leagues still open for business, including Turkey, Israel, and Romania.
A seasoned international, Omeruo has been a key figure for Nigeria since making his senior debut in 2013. He played a vital role in the Super Eagles’ 2013 Africa Cup of Nations triumph and featured in the 2014 and 2018 FIFA World Cups.Â
He was also part of Nigeria’s squad for the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup and was included in the country’s provisional squad for the 2016 Olympics. Â
With his experience and leadership, Omeruo remains a valuable asset, and his next move could be crucial for both his club career and Nigeria’s World Cup qualification hopes.
