Kaizer Chiefs Boss Explains Why Akpeyi was Dropped

Daniel Akpeyi could return for Kaizer Chiefs this weekend in the PSL Soweto Derby after he was rested for the midweek league game against Chippa United.

Chiefs Boss Ernst Middendorp explained the reason for dropping the Nigerian to the bench.

The 34 year-old Nigeria international had emerged first choice in for Amakhosi in the absence of injured Itumeleng Khune.

On Wednesday, Middendorp opted for Bruce Bvuma, and the youngster “played well and kept a clean sheet” the Coach said, but hinted Akpeyi will return this weekend.

The former Warri Wolves man was dropped because he had accumulated three yellow cards and risked missing the Pirates game if he picked up another.

“Daniel Akpeyi is clearly on three yellow cards and we had to look at that and make a decision in that area. I’m glad Bruce Bvuma played well and kept a clean sheet,” Middendorp explained.

“The games before and after the Soweto Derby are tricky. This one is more complicated and needed some juggling. Playing a Derby two weekends in a row and having a midweek game was always a challenge.

“A huge compliment goes to the players. They are really coming to the party and adapting well to the situation.”
